In April, Key Smart Plan Co. had the privilege of leading a Budgeting Lunch & Learn for a truly inspiring group of college students enrolled in the DSCEJ-LKQ Media Interns Program. This dynamic initiative, a partnership between the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) and the Leona Kings and Queens Foundation (LKQ), provides hands-on training in media production, advocacy, and community-driven storytelling.

Our session focused on the fundamentals of budgeting—a life skill that’s critical not just for personal success but for leading community impact. The interns showed incredible engagement and curiosity, asking smart questions and sharing their own insights. It was clear from the energy during the session that they’re not just future media professionals—they’re future changemakers.

Fast forward to today’s closing luncheon, where we had the opportunity to celebrate the completion of their internship journey. It was an honor to be invited back and to witness firsthand how much these students have grown in just a few short months.

Interns learn videography, graphic design, digital storytelling, and environmental advocacy, while partnering with community organizations in Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley.” Through this experience, they’re amplifying voices that often go unheard and learning how to drive meaningful change.
